There are three completely different ways of telling a garage door to open, they fail in three different ways, and almost every compatibility problem is really a case of using the wrong one.

There are three separate ways to operate a garage door, and they are not interchangeable: a radio remote, a vehicle’s built-in transmitter, and an internet connection to the opener. A handheld remote and a car’s built-in buttons both speak radio directly to the receiver in the opener head — the car is simply learning to imitate your remote. An app is completely different: it talks to the opener over your home network or the manufacturer’s service, and has nothing to do with radio at all. Most “my car will not pair” problems come down to one of three things: the opener uses a rolling code the vehicle system needs a bridge to work with, the vehicle system was never taught using the correct sequence, or the opener predates rolling code entirely and should be replaced on security grounds rather than made to work. Identify which of the three you are using before troubleshooting — and check the current documentation for your specific car and opener, because this is the one subject where the details genuinely change.

Almost every problem starts here
People troubleshoot the wrong one constantly, because from the driver’s seat all three look like a button.
The handheld remote is a small radio transmitter. It sends a signal on a specific frequency, the receiver in the opener head hears it, and the door moves. There is no network involved, no account, and nothing to configure beyond teaching the opener to recognise that particular transmitter. When it stops working the causes are physical: a flat coin cell, a receiver whose range has dropped, or interference.
The car’s built-in buttons are the same thing in a different box. The vehicle’s system is a programmable radio transmitter that learns to imitate your handheld remote. That is the crucial point people miss: the car is not connecting to your garage. It is learning to speak the same radio language as the remote in your kitchen drawer. Everything that affects a remote affects it.
The app is a genuinely different thing. It talks over your home network or the opener manufacturer’s internet service, and there is no radio between your phone and the door at all. Which is why the app can work perfectly while the remote does not, and vice versa — they share nothing except the door.
Sorting a problem starts with establishing which of the three has failed, because the causes do not overlap. If the remote works and the car does not, the fault is in how the car was taught. If the car and the remote both fail and the app works, the fault is in the radio receiver rather than the opener as a whole. If the app fails and everything else is fine, it is a network or account problem and the door is blameless.
Diagnose by elimination
Because the three paths are independent, which ones still work is a diagnosis in itself.

The single most common cause
Early garage door remotes sent a fixed code. The transmitter said the same thing every time, and the receiver opened the door whenever it heard it. Simple, and completely insecure: anybody who captured the signal once could replay it, and remotes with physical switches inside could be set by hand to match a neighbour’s.
Rolling code replaced that. The transmitter and receiver share a sequence, and the code changes on every press — so capturing one transmission is useless because that code will never be accepted again. It is the reason a modern garage door is not trivially opened from the street, and it has been standard on residential openers for a long time now.
The compatibility consequence is this. A vehicle’s built-in transmitter cannot simply record and replay a rolling-code signal the way it can a fixed one, because the code it recorded is already spent. So the pairing process has an extra step: after training the vehicle from the handheld remote, somebody has to press a learn button on the opener head itself, which tells the receiver to accept the vehicle as a legitimate new transmitter and synchronise the sequence with it.
That step is where most failed pairings happen. People train the car from the remote, find it does not work, and conclude the systems are incompatible — when in fact the process was two-thirds finished. The learn button is usually on the back or side of the motor head, often under a light cover, and reaching it means a ladder, which is the real reason it gets skipped.
There is a second consequence worth knowing about, and it is a security one rather than a convenience one.
A remote with a row of small physical switches inside the battery compartment is a fixed-code transmitter, and it means the opener predates rolling code. That opener can be opened by somebody who captures the signal or works out the switch positions, and neither is difficult.
That is not an age problem to be tolerated, it is a live vulnerability on the door between the street and your house. It is also the one situation where we would say plainly that the answer is a new operator rather than making the old one work with a car.
A replacement brings the security up to date and, in California, brings the opener into line with the battery-backup requirement at the same time — which is its own rule worth knowing.
The vehicle side
Vehicle integrations differ and change, so this is the shape of the problem rather than a set of button presses for your particular car.
By far the most common. Training the vehicle from the handheld remote is only part of the job on a rolling-code opener; the receiver then has to be told to accept the vehicle.
That means physically pressing a learn button on the opener head and then operating the vehicle’s button within a short window. It needs two people or a lot of ladder work, and it is the step that gets abandoned.
If your car worked at a previous house and not at this one, this is almost always why.
Some opener manufacturers keep their radio protocol closed, and vehicle systems then need an intermediate module to talk to them. Where that is the case, it is not a fault to be troubleshooted — it is a missing component.
Which combinations need one changes, so the honest instruction is to check the current compatibility information published for your vehicle’s system and your opener before buying anything.

A fixed-code opener with switch-set remotes predates the whole conversation. Some vehicle systems will learn it, because imitating a fixed code is easy — which is precisely the problem.
Making a car open an insecure door faster is not an upgrade. This is the case where the right answer is a new operator rather than a successful pairing.

Train from a working remote, not from memory. If the handheld remote is itself failing — flat cell, damaged — the vehicle is learning a signal that is already unreliable. Establish that the remote works properly first.
Clear the vehicle’s memory when you move house, and the opener’s when you buy one. A vehicle that has learned a previous property’s door is carrying a transmitter for a house you no longer live in. The same applies in reverse to an opener that still has an old owner’s remotes in memory, which is worth clearing on the day you get the keys.
Phones and smart homes
Connecting a door to a phone does nothing whatsoever for how well the door runs. It is worth being blunt about that, because it is sold as though it were an upgrade to the door rather than an addition beside it.
What it genuinely gives you is knowing. Whether the door is open, from anywhere; a notification if it has been left open; a way to let somebody in without a key. For a household that regularly wonders whether it was closed, that is worth having and we fit it happily. It is a convenience feature and a good one.
What it does not give you is reliability. It adds a network, an account and a service between you and a door that previously depended on a radio and a motor — each of which is another thing that can be unavailable. The remote in the car and the wall console remain the paths that work when the internet does not, which is worth remembering before anybody treats the app as the primary control.
There are three broad ways to get it. A current opener with the capability built in, which is the tidiest. A retrofit module added to an existing opener, which is usually a sound option on a unit that is otherwise fine. Or a separate sensor-and-relay device that works alongside whatever you have. Which is appropriate depends on the opener you already own, and it is a question worth asking before buying a box.
The one thing worth checking before you commit to a smart-home ecosystem is whether the integration you want is supported directly or needs a bridge, and whether any part of it depends on an ongoing service. Those arrangements change, which is exactly why this page describes the shape rather than naming today’s answer.
Where a garage adjoins living space, the thing worth spending on is the door and its insulation rather than the app. A quieter, better-sealed door changes daily life more than a notification does.

Pairing a vehicle to an opener is a two-person, one-ladder job, and it is something we do as part of an installation or while we are out for something else. If the only obstacle is that nobody can reach the learn button, that is a five-minute problem rather than a purchase.
Where the honest answer is that the opener predates rolling code, we will say so and explain why the right move is a replacement rather than a successful pairing. Making an insecure door open faster is not a service worth providing.
