Why people replace a door here
On pre-war and early post-war garages we regularly find jamb-mounted hardware, non-standard headroom and openings that are not a modern stock size. That does not mean you cannot have a new door - it means the door is made to the opening rather than picked off a shelf, and the measure matters more here than anywhere else in the county.
Older acrylic and single-glazed panels in a desert door haze over under ultraviolet. It is cosmetic right up until it is the whole front of a house somebody is trying to sell.
Doors on property that is rented or empty for months cycle unpredictably and get looked at rarely. Owners frequently replace simply to stop the phone calls, and specify for durability rather than for looks.
Full sun on a dark or mid-tone finish eventually chalks it, and no amount of cleaning brings it back. On a street where the elevations matter, that is a replacement trigger on its own.

The head hangs at the hottest point of an uninsulated ceiling, and units here routinely fail at half the age they reach on the coast. At the second one it is worth asking what the door is doing to it.
Dark colours on a sun-facing door can bow a section, and some manufacturers exclude the darkest colours from warranty. Ask for the painting instructions and the warranty exclusions before you choose a colour.

Permits, codes and the bit that changes the job
Permits in Coachella go through the City of Coachella building department rather than the county. A like-for-like door swap generally does not need one. New headers, changes to the size of the opening, or a new dedicated circuit for an opener generally do.
We tell you which side of that line your job falls on before you commit to anything, and we would encourage you to confirm it with the department yourself — they are the only authority on their own rules and requirements change.
California has required battery backup on residential garage door openers since 1 July 2019, under Health and Safety Code section 19892. The clause that catches people out is 19892(c): a replacement residential garage door may not be connected to an existing opener that does not meet it, and a civil penalty applies per non-compliant opener. In plain terms — if your opener predates the rule and has no backup battery, the opener is part of this job whether you planned it or not. We check it at the measure and tell you then, not on fitting day.
Parts and labour listed separately, the door model and construction written down, the spring wire size and length, the strut package where the door is rated for wind, warranty terms on both parts and labour, and a total that does not move once work starts. A verbal lump sum with no part numbers is not a quote, it is an opening position — and it is the single most useful thing to check across the three quotes you get.

We do not publish a figure and we will not quote one over the phone, and the reason is not evasiveness. The door itself will outlast the moving parts by a wide margin in this climate. Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, rollers and seals are wear items, and the operator is a separate lifespan again. Those are maintenance items rather than door failures, and they are the reason we specify them properly at the start.

Noticeably, and it is the upgrade people comment on most. Most of the noise from an old door is worn steel rollers and loose hardware rather than the door itself, and a new assembly with sealed nylon rollers on a bonded section is a different machine.
The measure is usually quick to arrange. The lead time after that is the door, not us — stock sizes are fast, made-to-measure and custom timber are not. You get the real interval when we have measured, rather than an optimistic one on the phone.
