Run the door down three times and note where it reverses. If it stops at the same point every time, the cause is mechanical. If it stops at a different point each time, the cause is electrical. That one question splits almost the whole diagnosis, and it is the first thing worth establishing. Same point every time means something physical is happening at that spot: an obstruction in the track, a roller binding, a bent section of track, or a travel limit set wrong. A different point each time means the opener is being told to stop — misaligned or dirty photo-eyes, a force setting that is too sensitive for a door that has grown stiff, radio interference, or on a hot afternoon a thermal cutout in the motor. Whatever the cause, do not turn the force setting up to make it close. That does not fix the door; it removes the protection that was stopping it, and the protection was working correctly.

Before you touch anything

It takes three runs of the door and no tools, and it halves the problem.

A door that reverses is a door that has been told to reverse, or a door that has been stopped. Those are different situations with different causes, and the way to tell them apart is not to look at the door — it is to look at where it happens.

Reversing at the same point every time is mechanical. Something physical exists at that point in the travel: a roller reaching a damaged bit of track, a bolt or bracket that has worked loose into the path, debris in the bottom of the vertical track, a section that has started to bind, or a down-travel limit set so the opener thinks it has reached the floor when it has not. The door is being physically resisted, the opener senses the resistance, and it does what it is designed to do.

Reversing at a different point each time is electrical. The mechanics are fine and something is interrupting the signal that says “keep going”. Misaligned or dirty photo-eyes are the classic case, and they are genuinely the most common single cause — but so are a force setting that has become too sensitive for a door that has stiffened with age, intermittent wiring at a sensor bracket, and on a hot afternoon a thermal cutout in the motor.

There is a third pattern worth naming because people describe it the same way: the door will not close at all unless you hold the wall button down. That is not a fault developing, that is the opener telling you its safety circuit is not satisfied and putting you into the deliberate manual override. It is a specific diagnosis and it is covered below.

Three runs and a note of where it stopped is genuinely all the preparation this needs, and it is the difference between a five-minute phone call and a ten-minute one. The monthly safety tests are worth knowing separately, because a door that fails one of those has a different urgency.

Note how few rows say “you”. That is not us protecting our own trade — it is that limits, force and track alignment are the three adjustments where getting it wrong makes a door less safe rather than more, and they are all in the technician column for that reason.

Ten minutes, no tools, nothing touched

You are gathering two facts: where it reverses, and whether that point moves. Nothing is adjusted and nothing is opened up.

  1. Watch it close, from insideStand inside the garage, well clear of the door, and run it down. Watch the whole travel rather than just the moment it reverses. If the door is behaving unpredictably, keep everybody else out of the garage while you do this.
  2. Note exactly where it reversesHow far down had it got? Fix it in your mind against something that does not move — the top of the opening, a bracket, which section was level with the header. This is the single most useful thing you can tell us on the phone.
  3. Do it twice moreSame point all three times, or a different point? That answer decides which half of this page applies to you, and it is worth the two extra minutes. One run tells you almost nothing.
  4. Listen to what happens immediately beforeGrinding or scraping just before it reverses points at something binding. Silence, or a click from the opener head, points at the safety circuit or the force setting instead.
  5. Look at the opener head and both sensor lightsMost openers flash a diagnostic code from the head or the wall console when they reverse. Count the flashes and look the code up in your own manual — codes differ by manufacturer, so anybody publishing a universal table is guessing. Check both sensor indicators as well: steady is normal, flickering or dark is not.

If it only closes while you hold the wall button, stop

That is the constant-pressure override, and it exists so you can close a door in an emergency. Using it daily means running a door whose entrapment protection is not working, which is the system that stops a closing door on a child or a pet. It is not a workaround and it should not become the routine. Get the safety circuit repaired.

The most common bad advice on the internet

Never turn the force up to make it closeand here is exactly why.

Search this symptom and you will be told to increase the down-force on the opener. It is the worst advice in the results and it is everywhere.

What the force setting actually is

It is the threshold at which the opener decides it has hit something. When resistance exceeds that threshold, the door reverses. That is not a malfunction — that is the entrapment protection working exactly as designed, and it has been a requirement on residential operators manufactured since 1 January 1993 under the federal rule and the UL 325 standard behind it.

So a door that reverses because of the force setting is a door whose opener is detecting real resistance. The resistance is the problem. The threshold is the messenger.

What turning it up actually does

It raises the amount of resistance the door will push through before it decides something is wrong. The door then closes — and it closes through whatever was resisting it, which might be a stiff roller today and something else entirely another day.

You have not repaired the door. You have removed the protection and left the fault, and you have done it on a machine heavy enough to be dangerous. If a door needs more force this month than it needed last month, the correct question is what changed in the door.

Almost always the answer is balance, rollers or hardware — and worn rollers are the most common single cause of a door getting harder to move.

The same argument applies to the photo-eyes

The other common suggestion is to raise the sensors, move them, or bridge them to stop nuisance reversals. The eyes sit close to the floor by design and by manufacturer practice, because that is the height at which a crawling child is caught.

A technician who bypasses your photo-eyes to make a door work has not repaired anything either; they have transferred a liability onto you. Ask what was done to the safety system before anybody leaves, and test it yourself afterwards.

Riverside County specifics

Symptom articles are written for everywhere, which means they are written for nowhere. Three of the causes above are disproportionately common here, and one of them is misdiagnosed almost every time.

Dust on the lenses, across the desert

The photo-eyes sit within about six inches of the floor, which in the Coachella Valley is exactly where blown dust settles and where cobwebs get built. A nuisance reversal here is far more often a dirty lens than a faulty sensor.

It is a rag and thirty seconds, and it should be on the list twice a year rather than treated as a fault. What it should never be is solved by moving the sensor.

Track debris, after a wind event

In the San Gorgonio Pass and after the autumn Santa Anas inland, the bottom of the vertical track collects grit, leaf litter and small debris. A roller reaching it at the same point every time produces a textbook same-spot reversal.

This is the one cause on the whole page that is genuinely a homeowner fix: clear it, wipe the track dry, and leave it dry. After any wind event it is worth looking before you run the door at all.

Thermal cutout, and why it gets misdiagnosed

This is the one people get wrong. An opener motor has a thermal protection device that shuts it down when it gets too hot, and the opener head hangs at the hottest point of an uninsulated garage ceiling — which in this county, in summer, is very hot indeed.

The pattern is unmistakable once you know it: the door misbehaves on a hot afternoon, sometimes stopping partway, sometimes refusing to start, and then works perfectly at seven the next morning. Because it works in the morning, people conclude the fault has cleared and it is intermittent electrics. It is not. It is temperature.

The honest fixes are the boring ones: an insulated door, which lowers the ceiling temperature the opener lives in, ventilation, and where the unit is already old, a replacement rated for the ambient it is actually working in. Turning the force up, needless to say, does nothing for it at all.

None of the three appears in a national troubleshooting list, and between them they account for a large share of what we are actually called out to for this symptom.

Why does my garage door close halfway and then go back up?

Run it three times and note where it reverses. If it stops at the same point every time, something physical is at that point — debris in the track, a binding roller, damaged track, or a travel limit set wrong. Should I turn up the force setting to make it close?

A door that reverses is a door whose safety systems are working. That is the reassuring half. The unreassuring half is that it is telling you something has changed, and the causes range from debris you can sweep out to a door that is no longer running true.

What is genuinely unsafe is the workaround: forcing it closed with the override, or turning the force up. Either of those leaves you operating a heavy door with its protection defeated, which is a different risk entirely from a door that stops when it should.
